LOS ANGELES – Officials at California State University, Los Angeles, have apologized to about 500 students who mistakenly received letters saying they'd been academically disqualified from returning for the winter quarter.
University officials tell the Los Angeles Times that all of the students were on academic probation, but only 164 students should have received disqualification letters.
The letters were sent out by the registrar's office the week of Dec. 27. The students were told their fall 2010 grade point averages and overall GPAs fell below university standards for continued enrollment. Students were also told they could submit a petition to be reinstated after meeting with their academic adviser.
The mix-up was blamed on a mailing code error.
