ATLANTA – Three people were killed in the Atlanta area on Thursday as heavy weather lashed the region, myFOXatlanta.com reported.
Two women in their 60s died when heavy winds caused a tree to fall on their vehicle in northwest Atlanta.
In a separate incident, a 19-year-old man was killed when a gust of wind blew a tree down on top of him while he cleaned up fallen limbs in his grandfather's yard in Cobb County.
The deaths, confirmed by police, came amid widespread weather-related chaos across the region. A series of consecutive thunderstorms Thursday afternoon caused power blackouts, flight delays and damage to buildings and vehicles.
A UPS truck caught on fire after being hit by a tree, WXIA-TV reported. The condition of the driver was not known.
At Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, some departing flights were delayed up to three hours. Inbound flights were also delayed.
About 100,000 homes in the Atlanta metro area were without power at midnight local time Friday, according to a Georgia Power spokesperson.
