LIVONIA, Mich. – Authorities say a veteran police officer and a home burglary suspect have been killed in an exchange of gunfire in suburban Detroit.
Livonia police Chief Robert Stevenson said during a news conference Monday night that Officer Larry Nehasil was killed in a shootout with two suspects around 6 p.m. Monday. The shooting happened in Walled Lake., which is about 10 miles from Livonia.
Stevenson said the suspects were trying to break into a house when police tried to arrest them. The suspect who survived the shooting was taken into custody.
Stevenson said 48-year-old Nehasil had worked for the agency for 20 years.
He says it's the first time in the department's history that an officer has been shot to death.
